PROUD OF AMSTERDAM

Which fun places in Amsterdam would you refer tourists to?

WELCOME TEAM

About us

The Welcome Team Amsterdam consists of a group of enthusiastic volunteers who provide information and tips to tourists and day trippers to make their stay in Amsterdam unforgettable.

With our team we go into the city every Friday and Saturday to welcome visitors to Amsterdam in a hospitable manner and show them the way.

Welkom Team Heineken

We do this at the Central Station and the Muntplein. We point people to the nicest, coolest, cheapest, most expensive hotels, restaurants, museums, attractions, shops and shopping streets, markets, parks, public transport etc. We also pay attention to beautiful places and sights outside the city centre. In this way we help to spread tourists. Finally, we give them tips to avoid becoming a victim of pickpocketing.

The founding

The Welcome Team was founded in 2008 by Guido Frankfurther under the name ‘Hosts and hostesses are called Welcome’. At the time, the project fell under the Stichting Alliantie Welcome Amsterdam and was widely supported by the Amsterdam business community. Since 2018, the renewed Welkom has continued under the flag of the Stichting Welkom Amsterdam.

WELCOME TEAM

Our work

Our work as Welcome Team is fun to do. You always speak to people who are eager to do something and are positive. If there is someone who is not interested, that is also fine.

We always start our Friday and Saturday shifts of 3 hours with a coffee or tea. Then we discuss how we want to work that morning or afternoon. Where are we going to stand and who is going to go out together. Is there any news? Nice new exhibitions or new terraces etc. We also exchange that with each other.

When we go out, we make contact with people in different ways, sometimes we talk to them ourselves, or they talk to us. We have nice conversations and are a source of information and guidance. With our short conversations we really help people ‘on their way’ and those 3 hours pass by quickly.

Working in teams also allows you to get to know other volunteers. The team spirit is good. You get to know new people and do great work together.

WELCOME TEAM

Volunteers

The Welcome Team works with volunteers and is always looking for new volunteers.

Do you enjoy helping people, do you love Amsterdam and do you speak English in addition to Dutch? Or another foreign language? Then come and try it out to experience what it is like to be a Welcome Team Member.

The Welcome Team is on the Stationsplein on Friday and Saturday. In principle, there are two teams in two different places. There is a morning shift and an afternoon shift.

As a volunteer, you will be loaned your own uniform, consisting of a kiwi green polo, sweater, jacket and cap. You will wear these on black trousers and black shoes. You will also receive an information bag in which the answer to (almost) all questions from tourists can be found.

Regularly, working visits are organized to our partners to get acquainted with a tourist spot in the city. That can be anything. From a nice hotel, boat trip or attraction to the Amsterdam Police and the GVB. Everywhere we are welcomed as VIPs.

WELCOME TEAM

Partners

The Welcome Team cannot do without its partners, a total of about 40! Among them are tourist companies, shops, business associations, but also the GVB and the Police.

With their contributions we can buy uniforms, keep our information materials up to date, maintain a website, have meeting rooms, and get information about the working methods of pickpockets, give our director a compensation and organize a festive kick-off in April. All very important and highly appreciated by us!

But we are also welcomed by our partners for a working visit, so that we can get to know each other better and therefore do our work on the street better. In a few years we hope to have visited all partners. Apart from that, we invite all partners for the traditional kick-off breakfast in the spring.

New partners are still joining, which shows that the city and the business community see the added value of our Welcome Team. New partners are of course very welcome. If you are interested, please contact us.

I would like to become a volunteer and get to know each other.

I would like to register with the Welkom Amsterdam Foundation to get acquainted and to come and do a trial service.

After you have registered, you will receive a telephone call from us within a few days for an interview and we will see when you would like to come and do a trial shift.

We'd love to hear from you!
